Filings Continue to Decline Nationally and Locally

Across the country, bankruptcy cases fell 8.5 percent for the 12-month period ending March 31, 2016, compared with the year ending March 31, 2015. The March 2016 annual bankruptcy filings totaled 833,515, compared with 911,086 cases in the year ending March 2015. For the same period, filings in the Eastern District of Washington fell 9.2 percent. There were 4,587 filings compared to 5,053 filings the previous year. Chapter 7 cases decreased 11.7 percent, Chapter 13 cases increased .2 percent, and Chapter 11 cases increased 6.7 percent. Chapter 12 cases increased 50 percent, with three cases filed.
