The Administrative Office for the U.S. Courts reports bankruptcy filings increased slightly for the 12-month period ending December 31, 2019, compared with calendar year 2018. It was the second straight quarter that bankruptcy filings rose, after annual declines lasting almost a decade. According to newly released data, 774,940 cases were filed in 2019, compared with 773,418 in the previous year, resulting in an increase of 0.2 percent.
Locally, filings fell 8.1 percent for the 12-month period ending December 31, 2019, compared with the year ending December 31, 2018. The 2019 bankruptcy filings totaled 3,259, compared with 3,549 cases in 2018.
